Rectangular headlights weren't legal on U.S. vehicles in 1970. The Feds finally Oked them for '76.
In Response To: I am surprised they did not use the taillights style for the front grille, too. Rectangular box headlights with turn signals next to them and mesh behind the vertical bars would make a nice phantom build. The head lights could even be hidden with upward rotating panels like ()

Some cars like the Dart and Valiant still had round lights in '76, as they were going out of production, and the automakers didn't want to bother with doing a 'one-year' facelift on them (the 1980 Volare/Aspen's square light nose, being an odd exception).
