Rectangular headlights weren't legal on U.S. vehicles in 1970. The Feds finally Oked them for '76.

Some cars like the Dart and Valiant still had round lights in '76, as they were going out of production, and the automakers didn't want to bother with doing a 'one-year' facelift on them (the 1980 Volare/Aspen's square light nose, being an odd exception).
