When the Mustang came out in 1964, AMT cut two separate tools...
In Response To: '65-'66 Mustang promo ()

...(not including the later fastback). A notchback coupe promo, and the annual kit tool, which had a removable coupe roof. The promo was revised along the way to a 66, and later reissued in 1969 as an unassembled kit called the "Peony Pony". Meanwhile, the regular kit tool was also updated to a 1966, then subsequently altered to create the Sonny & Cher custom Mustang pair created by George Barris. From there, the chassis and engine from the kit Mustang were borrowed for use under the Mach 1 show car. Autolite Special, Iron Horse. Etc. In the mid 70s, AMT dusted off the promo tool, opened up the hood, and combined the body and interior with the annual kit chassis and engine to create the 66 Mustang kit we've seen for the past 45+ years.
