I would expect the best business case is to make as many as you can sell, but have also seen where a company like Salvinos will limit production of specific versions to keep demand (and price) up. I suspect that R2 is the former and not the latter.
I also wonder which factors affect the life of a production run, though I suspect it’s almost purely demand/sales as some kits seem to be available forever while others seem to have short production runs.
