• Since things have been a little slow, I'll post this. I seem to remember someone having a question or a wandering about the old late 1960's to mid 1970's NACSCAR kits. I have been collecting the empty boxes of the ones that I remember. Every box ..... *PIC* .....

      • That is all I remember. It was later released as the #12 Allison Matador and also as the Allison Sportsman version. Don't remember how it was marked for driver but think mainly Davey drove it because I remember him at Ontario in a USAC race. *NM*

        • D V, do you remember what the deal was with the front end on the sportsman version? The grill was flipped upside down or laid back, think they called it the X2 option. NASCAR wouldn't let them run it, but USAC was looser on their rules. *NM*
          • The slope nose Matador was called a 'X-11'......
            • I saw a photo in a magazine years ago, of a Matador street car with the altered grill, but it might've been a factory prototype. *NM*
            • Always read that as 2 for some weird reason. So it was a piece that AMC came up with and not something Allison did on his own? *NM*
              • Penske's people came up with it. AMC's styling VP didn't like it, that in part nudged Penske over to Mercury. Allison then made his own deal with AMC *NM*

              • Had to scratch build as none of the Mat kits come with it. Basically did same as Bobby. Cut the grille from the kit piece and then made the headlight bucket/filler panels from scrap plastic. Made a couple discs for headlight covers, split and foiled-This 1:1 is the version *NM* *PIC*

                • Was the hood left alone, a stock hood? It seems that the front edge may have to be curved downward. *NM*
                  • If you google 74 matador x pics looks like the hood was the stock stamping, the amt kits looks like it doesnt capture it spot on tho and I didnt modify it on my build *NM*
                    • The reflection on the hood in this pic show the character line a bit but its not as pronounced as it is on the 1:1 *NM* *PIC*

  • Franks reply concerning Johan stock car kits reminded me that the Johan 1970 roadrunner also has a NASCAR version on the box top. So........I guess I have to start looking again. Are there any other NASCAR kits that you guys can think of that I don't have? Thanks. .... *PIC*
    • '69 RR annual box has a Petty #43 car on the side panel...but that's the year Petty was racing Fords! *NM*
  • The Petty Dart and the RWB #2 Scamp don't count. They're cool short track cars, but I only have them to fill the holes in the collection. *NM*

    • I don't like any stock cars after the late 1970's. The days of thunder are too new for what I like. *NM*
  • Scott: Thanks for posting these. Early NASCAR and short track kits are among my favourites. I had a number of these when I was a kid, but cut up many of the box covers to put up on the wall in my bedroom. Boxes didn't tend to be kept anyhow, but somehow...
