A '55 for 5/5

This 1955 Maxim 75' aerial is one of the first scratch builds I did back in 1985. Many photos and measurements were taken of the actual truck. It was retired from service in 1989 and replaced with an Emergency One 100' rear mount aerial.
The cab portion was taken from a KW kit and the aerial device was modified from an American Lafrance version to a Maxim design. The rest is scratch built. I did the fenders by softening plastic in boiling water over a wood buck. Corners were filled in with plastic and putty. The front grill was a straight piece out of the KW but was similarly softened in water using a broom handle for the buck to get the right curvature. The generator, exhaust fan and saw box were scratch built as well. The turntable surface was made non-skid with some fine sandpaper. Originally some of those soft Italeri tires were used but over time they cracked and disintegrated. They were eventually replaced with regular AMT style tires. The model is still in my display case.
