'44 Express for 4-4. *PICS*

After the Allies landed at Normandy, they discovered that French infrastructure had been badly damaged. The Germans still had ports tied up, and railways were in tough shape.

To get supplies to the ever-moving front, they built a temporary port and began to bring in millions of tons of supplies--170,000 vehicles, millions of gallons of fuel, food, medical supplies, ammunition, and on and on.

General Patton was moving so fast that he outran his supply lines, so the US put together the Red Ball Express in August of 1944. Before they were done, the Army ran the Red Ball, the White Ball, the Green Diamond, the ABC, and a couple of other patterns to bring supplies through France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

All of it by truck. It's a fascinating transport history.
