I am sure it was multiple scenarios but car modelers are kinda the cheap skates of the hobby. LOL.

I mean - look at how many military and aircraft kits there are that cost well over $ 100.00+. and more are made every year.

I build all kinds of models myself but cars probably the most simply because they are the most affordable out of all the genres. And I like a deal just like anyone else.

I have built 3 sci-fi kits -- all are over $ 100.00 easy. One PT boat - over $ 100.00. There are many more expensive kits I would buy and build but Just can't swing the cost.

What I am saying is that it's possible other magazines (for models other than cars) those builders are willing to consistently buy the magazines and support them.
