• Here's a good conversation starter. What's the difference between a lowrider and a custom? As in, what mod would make a lowrider not a lowrider, and more of a custom? Photos encouraged. *NM*
  • Low riders usually have stock bodies and trim, customs have mods like chopped tops, shaved door handles and/or trim or swapped trim like '53 Buick side chrome and '54 Pontiac grill on a '49 Merc... *NM*
  • For me, a Lowrider is stock bodied,custom paint,lowered & able to lay frame,essentially stock mechanicals but lots of chrome & polished bits...a Custom has some body mods,lowered,paint that shows body mods,mechanical & upholstery updates, similar but different styles or car. *NM*
  • Lowriders generally have paint that accentuates the stock body lines esp. panel paint in candys,pearls & flakes,whereas a Custom(no K) with its body mods usually only needs a more standard paint job so that the body mods are noticed & appreciated..flakes & pearls help this. *NM*
  • Has anyone seen a custom hop like a lowrider? How about those crazy cool stances the hydraulic suspension allows them to pose or drive around in (like on 3 wheels)? I myself think the hydraulic suspension is a major difference. *NM*

      • Honestly Steve, thank you. I didn't know any of what you mentioned. I always took it that one major difference was that low riders HAD to have hydraulically manipulated suspension. *NM*
      • Thanks for the input. I'm starting a lowrider build on the first of the month, and I've been really pulled toward the "bombs"the issue I face there, is that a bomb or "bomba" could be built to look a lot like an early 50's mild custom. *NM*
  • From what I understand, the Lowrider scene is part of the Chicano culture. It should also be noted there also are Lowrider bicycles and such. *NM*
