Sounds like you may have a "draw" in the system and not really a "short"......

......the easiest way to isolate a "draw" on an older (pre computer) vehicle is to disconnect the ground (-) at the battery then connect a voltage meter between the negative (-) terminal on the battery and the ground cable. If it reads anywhere near current battery voltage (Usually between 12.4 - 12.6 volts when fully charged) you have a draw. From here find the fuse block and remove one fuse at a time and take note of the voltage. If you pull a fuse and the voltage significantly drops that is the circuit that is causing the draw. Doing this will greatly reduce the time and guess work as to what system / circuit is causing the draw. Hope this helps !!! KT
