For someone wanting a '55, the Monogram was good, but limited - 1/24 left it on an island. That said, it is a terrfic kit if the fragile windshield frame holds up. Was probably a steady-selling product, but when Monogram saw the cash register light up with Tom's work, the fate was sealed for the stock PC 83.
The TD graphics and new bits were perfectly aligned with kids graduaring from Hot Wheels, and with the show car trends of the day.
Monogram went from square to hip pretty much overnight, really had an armlock on the slightly older kid builder who wanted to knock something together "the way it looked on the box" and move on to the next project.
They were not into the hobby the way some were, just liked to have fun and not overthink a build.
