Depends on the final color, really. I would try the mild 'standby' automotive primers first like Plastikote T-235 as close to the finish color as you can get

MCW makes a good acrylic acrylic sealer which is available in a rattle can.

In the day, Testor's metallic silver - which everyone had at leas one can of - will block most pigments. It's not a sandable surface and adhesion can be iffy when taping.

Alex Kustov has used Tamiya gray and white on many Ferrari builds - most pressings are in some shade of red.
