For those who were into comic books in the '90s to now, I think it was none other than comic book writer and former Marvel Comics direct sales rep Peter David (RIP 2025) who said the different cover idea would not last long, as he felt (I think) most comic book readers and collectors would eventually tire of it. On the other hand, he put forth the idea of having a different artist do the STORY artwork in a different copy of the same issue...

Yes, I'm aware of the 'cratering' of the hobby in recent years. As some comic fans die off, their collections hit the collector market, flooding it with more near-mint copies of everything, and there aren't enough new collectors who want to buy them...
