Aurora dropped the ball by not offering a complete car right away, and not having "name" cars like Revell did. Revell had a "good enough" product at the right price...

...with big-name drivers connected to the cars. Aurora might have been smarter to go with 1/25 scale. Less detail, yes, but the complete cars would have been within striking distance of AMT/MPC/Revell, and the lack of name drivers wouldn't have mattered as much. The garage diorama and separate accessories would have sold well, as nobody else had any of that stuff. Aurora didn't have the distribution or credibility to sell the higher-priced 1/16 scale stuff at that time.
