...years ago, one of the muscle car magazines had a special TA/AAR only issue. They featured a number of one-owner cars, as I recall none were ordered by their owners. All were bought off the lot. One guy priced a Hemi 'Cuda only to have to tell the dealer he couldn't get insurance on one. Dealer called him later the same day: "we got two of these AAR 'Cudas in today, maybe you'd be interested in this". Chrysler probably had to crash those things out and get X number of them onto dealers' lots in order to get them homologated for the Trans-Am series with the special hoods and spoilers.
Same deal a few years earlier, with the '66 "D/Darts". Only they didn't have to make as many of those, and dealers bought all of them to race. One of the Mopar magazines researched those, they couldn't find anyone who actually ordered one. The long-time owners they ran into didn't get their cars new, they bought them from dealers that had campaigned them at the drags.
