Back in the day, Popular Science mag ran photos of forward year test vehicles out on the road. A few of those were of Colonnade cars, and yes, they showed 1972-level far less prominent front bumpers. Looked good. The Chevelle was the one that lost the plot (more than ...

...the others) when forced to adapt to the bogus 5mph legislation. I do recall an image of a four door Century w/o the 5mph bumpers as being attractive - the same general design theme ss the final car, but a more tailored look.

But when it came to 5mph bumpers, Chrysler did by far the best job for 1973, and my former employer was by far the worst. The "railroad tie/picnic bench" era Ford products of that era are my least favorite products of all. Wasn't until 1978 (Fairmont/Zephyr) and 1979 (Crown Vic./Marquis and Mustang/Capri) that Ford got its act together on 5mph bumpers IMHO...
