The bolt-on subframe was something GM was messing with since the mid-Fifties...

...they were just looking for something to try it on. The first Chevy II had the bolt-on forward bulkhead as well as the single-leaf rear springs, two other experimental ideas, but was otherwise a quick crib of the Ford Falcon. The bolt-on subframe worked great in testing for the first-generation Camaro and '68 Nova which were being developed together. I might be wrong though, but didn't the Toronado also have a stub frame in front (and maybe another one out back)?

Is the front sub-frame on a 1969 Mustang welded to the floor pans like on a MOPAR A, B and E body, or is it bolted on like a 1970's Camaro and Firebird ? *NM*
- AFAIK the Mustang and its older brothers Falcon & Comet all have their subframe,inner guards & front crossmember spot welded together & to the firewall & floor, suspenion parts & gearbox mount are bolt-ons. *NM*
- Andy is correct about the Fords (everything welded) but aren't the Mopars bolted on (except the A-bodies)? *NM*

    - Depends on how you define “subframe”. The “frame rails” on Mopars were welded to the unitized body structure. The “K frame” was essentially an engine cradle that bolted on from below. In the model car world, we would want to paint the K frame black and the
