I could easily see a dealer adding the stripe to move a car or close a deal.

If it wasn't already part of the build.

ChryCo would also add features like vinyl tops to cover up mistakes in paint that got past inspection, and were too big for repair booth touch up.

There was a twin turbo high pressure sales organization stuffing these into dealers - you had to be "on the team" taking what the District Manager was offering or you were getting passed up for whatever was hot. Plenty of freak cars got built later in the year when stocks were high of parts that would not carry over, trim counts and plant restrictions be darned.

I'm not picking on Chrysler - every OE does this in one way or another - but they had an especially severe case.

FWIW, a lot of those Chrysler points got Toyota deals when Bob McCurry left the Pentastar for the Rising Sun, and they pretty well 'made' the brand in the US. If you were a dealer and not repeating the mantra of "Thank you sir may I have another" - you were out.

They had no patience for hometown barbershop proprietors, either you were growing or you were dying, simple as that.
