You are correct when you say tickets prices are heating up, I love turn 4, but if I had to move somewhere else, I'd look at Grandstand E or turn 3. Turn 3 seats are the most under rated of all seats in that place. , try to sit on the northern 1/3 section if you choose turn 3. The speedway has a seating chart on their website Many of the greatest passes in Speedway history have happened at the end of the back stretch.
where ever you sit, look for the seats that provide the highest vantage point. What ever you do, don't be fooled into front stretch seats, You will see about 100 feet of the track and it provides nothing of value. The old Tower terrace seats provide pit action, but the pits are spaced out such that you will only really see about 10 pit stalls at best, and the race is difficult to focus on in those seats. Large video screens are all over the track, so if you miss something you can catch up on the screens.
Plan on leaving about 2 hours earlier than you think is neccessary and then leave an hour before that
. Parking is a pain, and with out a parking pass you aren't parking on the speedway property, and that parking sold out months ago. consider parking downtown or the airport and take the shuttle to the track. That isn't cheap either, but you don't have to fight the traffic. There is curbside parking on the side streets, but you really have to be familiar with the area, and that's somewhat problematic as the track is not located in the best part of town, though the large crowds tend to keep it safe for the most part.
One other note, concessions are kind of pricey, but they are manned by groups like the boy scouts and other civic groups and they benefit from the sales. The speedway is cashless, so you'll need some form of plastic if you want to buy souvenirs. You can carry in coolers and take them to your seats, but you'll have to leave any glass at the gates.
The crowd is immense and for the most part is behaved, the snake pit remains pretty much in name only as there is a EDM concert that is ongoing in the turn 3 infield and uses that moniker. The true debauchery of the 60's and 70's and part of the 80's is long gone, but alcohol consumption remains quite high, especially if its a warm Indiana day, but it's mostly tame.
Consider getting in as early as possible and take in all the pagentry, The electricity is palpable about an hour before race start, and if you can remain unemotional durning "Taps" and "Backhome in Indiana", you'll need to have someone check for a pulse, it's among the most intense pre race event you'll ever be a part of.
One last bit of advice, you may want to contact the speedway ticket office, as I believe they do offer a service to sell tickets that have been returned by the ticket holders, scalping is common place and if you wait until late, some bargins can be had, also if you are going alone, the speedway may have some single seats left over in some premium locations, but I kind of doubt it.
Good Luck and if you get NW Vista seats, give me a shout out and maybe we can meet up.
