When I thought I had all the time in the world as a retiree, I scored a very good condition AMT chip folder - from what I'll call the 'first' generation with the goal of matching each of the colors to a current analogue. A lot more challenging than I'd originally thought. Turns out the OE paint suppliers (PPG, et al) no longer have the thick books with the color 'bullseye' samples.
Anyway.... what I'm seeking and can't find is the 'second' generation, which I'm recalling came out around '68-'69.
That selection had more contemporary colors similar to popular mid-60s OE finishes - I'm recalling a "Surf Green" that landed somewhere between Ford Dark Jade and Pontiac Verdoro Green as one example. These were more saturated jewel tones that were favored in the era.
AMT had a full page product flyer showing the new rack, with the new colors all lined up, but I've never seen a second gen chip folder with good samples that could theoretically be matched by some of the very sophisticated scanning technology of today.
As Mark noted, Tamiya has replicates for the bulk of the solids. However, many of the more unique finishes... like the lime golds and grape frosts ... are a very tough match.
That said, I also know that a lot of OE finishes - especially the reds and yellows that required exotic/toxic pigments - are difficult or impossible to blend today. Ditto some of the flake finishes such as the GM "Firefrost" line are also impossible because those additives are no longer produced, either.
