Not everyone did, but skirting the rules was a common practice.....

for instance, I read where some guys would use 6 cylinder motor mounts instead of the v-8 MM, allowing the motor to sit higher and thus, in theory, allow for better weight transfer. While that example may not have been ill-legal per say. it's probably skirting the rules.

so subtle little changes can be found on cars, just be prepared to argue your case with tech, be willing to change the offending part or alteration, or return home with your tail between your legs! : )

you had to meet a min. weight, so acid dipped parts or fiberglass and the like were not really necessary, nor allowed.
