  • I built a sectioned 50 convertible, probably 45 years ago, using an old article from (if memory serves) an early Rod & Custom Magazine as my guide. As I recall it was actually a pretty simple job

    • How are long horizontal cuts made? How do you 'splice' the cuts back together to give them some strength? Thanks. *NM*
      • In most of the articles I have seen, the cuts were made with a razor saw. The cut out strip was often cemented over the joint on the inside, for strength *NM*

          • A strip of Evergreen might give you more surface area for gluing/adjusting
  • The old Scale Auto Enthusiast did a Merc issue with a how to on sectioning the '49 Merc. I bet the process would work on the Ford. *NM*
  • Mark Gustavson did an extensive series on sectioning the '49 in Car Modeler over several issues (guessing 1993-1995). Worth tracking down. Unfortunately it did not appear in his subsequent customizing book *NM*
  • I found the article I was thinking of. It's not as detailed as I remembered. My scans are from R&C Feb '63. If you look at the back cover scan you'll see my address in February 1963.....SCANS INSIDE....
  • I did one many years ago (and have a Merc in the works now). If you retain the stock wheel openings, things get tight at the back. And forget about bigger/wider tires without radiusing the openings, front or rear *NM*
  • Ideally, you want to find the area on the sides that is the widest, then use that as a center line. Take half of the intended amount above that line. half below *NM*

  • I did a story for Scale Auto around 2010 or so that showed the cutlines for sectioning a number of late 1940s/early 1950s model car bodies. It was based on an old article in a pocketbbook type pub from the 1950s, that was republished by Rodder's Journal a while back...TB *NM*

      • Thanks Chip. No, have not finished that car....haven't worked on it since about 1980. BTW, here's the suggested lead image that I photographed for that article, which IIRC the Editor did not want to use in the article (it was, to his defense, a bit dark).....TB *PIC*
