• I know that GM made a 4x4 Chevy van in the 1970's. I would like to build one. Should I put the suspension and driveline on the van frame, or should I use the pickup frame under the van? I know nothing about vans. Does anyone have any suggestions please? Thanks. *NM*
  • GM didn't have a Factory Built 4x4 van in the 70s but companies such as Quigley did 4x4 conversions. *NM*

  • You have raised a question I have wondered about. Were Carson tops a stock style from some make that folks used to customize other cars or were they strictly aftermarket product? What is their story? *NM*
    • Carson tops were strickly an aftermarket upholstery shop in LA , think they started in the late 30's....Rodders Journal, maybe Pat Ganahl did a feature on the Carson Top Shop, they were also fully padded inside. *NM*
• AMT's Mach Won...is this an old AMT kit or does it owe its linage to the Polar Lights Gas Ronda Mustang F/c of 20 yrs ago?....the M/W appears to have the same grille choices & SOHC that the P/L kit had? *NM*

    • Primary difference is that AMT removed the f/r roll pans from the chassis plate and added them to the parts tree
      • Does the '71-3 Mustang have a longer wheelbase than the '69-70, and if so, do the kits reflect the change?
        • '70 was 108", '71 was 109". Not enough to worry about in scale, even for a promo, back then *NM*

  • They are pretty cool kits. So far I've gotten the HQ Holden Custom Blown and the HJ Holden Panel Van Custom Blown. How do you like the box it comes in? Quite different than a normal kit. *NM*

  • Jim, I just did that very thing a few days ago. MCW Cragars cleaned w/Tamiya Acrylic Thinner first. Sprayed beautifully--and I'm not that good a painter. Sorry, no PIX. Don't know how to do the smart phone thing. *NM*
  • After cleaning I sprayed the chrome spray on some Fireball resin Cragars and had no problems. *NM*
  • If you have the time, means and parts, I'd try a dip in clear Future before spraying to A/B test the finish

            • Thought you'd never ask. Back in 1965-66 I worked for a Paper Mill thinning trees in forest. We had a Bombardier Muskeg Carrier H.D.W. to haul cut pulp. They're rare (70 built between 1958-1964). Been wanting to create one as long as I can remember. .......PICS INSIDE

  • Thanks, think you and Chipster may have figured it out, yes, I painted testors gold over the foil and the gold pigment in it may be reacting with the foil. And yes its a model of one the short track cars my family crewed/sponsored when I was a kid, a short track 61 Starliner *PIC*

• Just a thought, sort of looks like the issue is happening inside outward, between the foil and paint, in the paint, or on the plastic under the paint, sort of looks like there's some crinkling in the adjacent paint *NM*
• IMO stick to the path you are on now - the new-tool Duster side window opening drip rail contour never looked right to me
• It is a SOHC, not entirely sure it started with that engine or it was fitted down the line

    • They are metal kits built with '50's and '60's technology. *NM*
    • Made of pot metal with some plastic parts. Metal parts had toms of flash and other imperfections, lots of big ugly exposed screws, ... But this builder took care of all that. *NM*
    • Also note these were 1:20 scale. They also made some ofher kits in the series in 1:22 and 1:18 scale IIRC. *NM*
