Have seen some tasty and very simple builds recently (Dave Darby, take a bow) using the insert whitewalls and covers to get a convincing period look.

'59 Chevy 2-in-1 Lancers come to mind, and the flipper covers in the last '36 Ford that was out for a hot second.
