But I'm just a nostaligic old geezer remembering those epic race weekends in Detroit. I might be dreaming it, but IIRC, the race days also had major open wheel and NASCAR events... back when that was genuine Big Deal.
If hydros are your thing, make sure to snag a discount copy of "Madison" ... the sports biopic with James Caviezel.
The "losers persevere with teamwork and ingenuity, then win the race and save the hometown" has been repeated a thousand times, but it is heart-tugging in its own right, and for fans of the sport, has some pretty good action.
Bonus for us midwesterners: Narration is by John Mellencamp, who grew up in Indiana and was very engaged by the mythology of the race. Movie disappeared under the waves, was scheduled for release the same week that 9/11 hit, studio withdrew it from circulation. Did get released later, but to much less interest and fanfare, theatrical release was a bump in the road on the way to video.
I'd swear it was Mellencamp singing the title track, "Glory Bound," (a minor hit by Indiana based pop rockers The Grass Roots) but the film credits have no such mention.
