I think that was Ken Purdy, who was one of the first modern 'scholars' of the automobile

Wrote about them for True, Argosy, Playboy, etc...published several books including the excellent "Ken Purdy's Book of the Automobile" ( which I need to dig out from my storage...)

I really need to look up and re-read the story. But I recall him discussing cars like the Mercer, Bentley, Stutz, Bugatti and wondering if enthusiasts would collect cars of the 60s like Impalas and Bonnevilles?

The inference was that we'd lost something in the modern era from the heck-for-leather prewar performance classics.

Also recall him mentioning that he'd bought a 1969 Grand Prix, and was quite taken with the car, really liked the ride and handling.

Need to re-read once this incredible stretch of weather cools, the starter is back in the GTO and the revolving door of visitors slows down a bit.
