Back in the day (1970s), each of the 50 states set their own length maximums. Of course, that was also in the heyday of COE trucks.

The states set maximum lengths for semi-trucks. California had a max of 65 feet, which was usually a long trailer with a COE w/sleeper....or tandem trailers with a COE daycab (no sleeper).

Think the Feds put an end to the states setting their own standards sometime in the '80s.

Some fleets have 'short' trailers for route that cover smaller New England towns. Old Dominion Freight Lines still uses shorties.
