Enjoy your Memorial Weekend, but always remember it is more than cook outs, store sales promotions, and welcoming the beginning of summer...

Memorial Day is a special day set aside in remembrance of our nations brave men and women that gave their lives for our country.

It was originally called Decoration Day to honor the war dead. Soldiers and families would decorate graves of the fallen with flowers, flags and wreaths. Hence known as Decoration Day. Although Memorial Day became its official title in the 1880s, the holiday wouldn’t legally become Memorial Day until 1967.

Please don't use the greeting "HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY" it really offends a lot of vets that lost friends in battle, and they may school you on its true meaning. If you want to know what Memorial day is all about, visit your local Military Cemeteries, or the monument most towns have with the names of their war dead, or other ceremonies being held in their honor.

Veterans Day is for the living, and is on Nov 11, it is when living veterans are recognized, and honored for their service. It is fine to thank vets for their service everyday, especially if you see one wearing a WW 2 cap, not many left.

I was over at the USS Alabama Battle ship in the Mobile bay a few years ago, and they were holding a tribute for the very last sailor that served on the ship during WW 2.
