Thought Bonner was the drag racer with the Sport Coupe-based Thunderbolt, but that car resulted from a crash when a dealer mechanic WRECKED the car during a trip home.

Scraping my brain cells, the story was that the car returned home after a few match races or an MHRA points race, and some mechanic at Bonner's sponsor, took the car for a spin during his lunch hour, and ROLLED the car on some street. Since that dealer couldn't get his hands on a Fairlane 2-door sedan, he had a Sports Coupe (LONGER wheelbase Fairlane...) to base the rebuild on.

One of the odd Ford racing incidents (another would be Jerry Titus' rollover of his Shelby-built '67 Mustang Trans Am racer at Green Valley Raceway in Texas...and how his team magically REBUILT the car overnight...one book alleges that a backup car was stashed in the hauler, while another story has the team building a replica of Titus; car, from a Mustang coupe found at a nearby Ford dealer...)
