Nichels was displaced in 1970, when Petty returned home... of the conditions of his return to the Mopar camp (after a Plymouth alternative to the Daytona) was that his shop became the in-house builder of all the factory backed Mopars. Between '63 and '69, Petty built his own cars but Nichels built all of the others. That was a short lived deal, though: for '71, there were only two factory backed Mopars: one Dodge (Buddy Baker), and one Plymouth (Petty), both built by Petty Enterprises.
Nichels must have kept some of the Mopar parts...the Chris Vallo/David Pearson Pontiac GTOs had Mopar 8-3/4" rear axles!
