- One other thing they did, Terry, was use wood for the beds in the WC weapons carriers and the 1-1/2 ton Chevy trucks. That came along a couple of years after the war started and saved on steel as well. *NM*
  - Back in the day(1944/1946), one of the local junk yards was paying a "penny a pound' to us kids that would bring the guy "iron junk". I had a homemade wagon( I was 7 years old in 1944), and 10lbs. of scrap iron, meant, A WHOLE DIME!!! That's TWO candy bars. Eeeeeeeha! *NM*
    - I was only a wee lad of 4 back in 1944 but I do remember army units rolling by the house on their way to training. The amtracks scares the dickens out me. Made a lot of noise on old macadam roads. *NM*

        A gal I went to high school with had a party out at her family's ranch/farm and had a "hay ride" in her dad's army surplus half track they had "civilized". There was a area of their land that was sand dunes so it was ideal for that. Her dad even let me drive it some, but
