... a big shopping center opened a block from my parents' house. They had a grand opening, and one evening my parents took us over to see. One of the stores was called "The Toy Chest." And inside, it looked a lot like that counter photo. They were having a model contest and I remember this 1958 Buick that was painted black with red wheels and wide whites. I've been hooked on model cars ever since.
We used to spend a lot of time there, and sometimes when we had, a little money.
It became a craft store in the '90s, and oddly enough, I got the last model kit out of that building--an AMT Ford F-250 Star Truck. My mom taught painting classes at the craft store and found the kit on a back shelf.
Miss that store. It was a lot of fun.
